The exhibition Ricardo Martín. Photographer and Observer recalls an author who marked an epoch

The Kubo-kutxa gallery in San Sebastian is devoting the fourth exhibition within the special programming to mark the year of San Sebastian’s designation as European Capital of Culture to the photographer Ricardo Martín. Comprising 98 black and white images, the exhibition is recalling a photographer whose work is well known because he photographed the city of San Sebastian during one of its golden eras, but who went unnoticed as an author. Curated by Juantxo Egaña, the exhibition was inaugurated on 3 November and will remain open until 22 January, 2017. Thanks to the collaboration of the Filmoteca Vasca (Basque Film Archive), the screening of a short film of the 1920s is included; entitled San Sebastián y Lasarte, it contextualises and completes the exhibition by allowing one to see Martín’s scenes in motion.

Ricardo Martín embarked on his professional career in 1914 when the illustrated magazines were at their peak. He set up his photographic studio on Fuenterrabía street in San Sebastian, subsequently to be inaugurated in April 1915 with the name of Photo-Carte.

The photographer and his colleagues used to tour the beach and top locations every day. Their photos reported on the latest trends in fashion, including women sporting their novel bathing suits. They were not random snapshots, they sought distinction in their images. The Avenida de la Libertad, Paseo de la Concha and above all the corner of the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra turned into their backdrops.

Ricardo Martín was a multi-faceted photographer committed to ongoing experimenting. He was a reporter who bequeathed thousands of testimonies, anonymous portraits, accidents, joys and sadness. Martín used to tour the city, its promenades, its beaches, the neighbourhood festivals as well as those put on for the summer visitors.

The exhibition

The exhibition Ricardo Martín. Photographer and Observer is not organised chronologically but according to subjects, and concentrates on the themes and aspects that made this artist unique. As one goes around the exhibition what becomes clear ishow Ricardo Martín saw the turbulent society around him, the importance of observers in his photographs, the hypnotic nature of crowds, the throngs he loved to photograph. In an evocative text Lee Fontanella describes Ricardo Martín as ubiquitous as he seemed to be at all the events taking place at that time, moving naturally among the different social classes.

Australia: Black Eye Gallery presents "In the Time of Hope"

'In The Time of Hope' is a photographic observation of American society on the streets of Los Angeles during the Obama era.

On the road and footpaths, Robenstone looks at the visual splendor of the sun bleached and hyper saturated Californian landscape juxtaposed against the deteriorating icons of a once grander America. At times both candid and considered, ‘In The Time Of Hope’ is a complex study of a modern society at battle with itself and it’s staunch values of the past.

In Australia: Exhibition "Concrete"

An exhibition by Rhiannon Slatter

‘Concrete’, a series of large scale prints, represents both an extension of and departure from Rhiannon Slatter’s architectural photography. Her fascination with scales of production in industry has led her to study the prefabricated concrete forms which appear frequently in our landscape and continue to multiply - simple, austere shapes which represent large scale, fast construction methods themselves while also serving as containers for industrial production.

Chicago: Lecture with Joel Peter Wilkin

Joel-Peter Witkin is renowned as the creator of elaborately constructed and often erotically charged photographic tableaux exploring grand themes of religion, sex and mortality with continual references to art history. Witkin has pursued complex issues of the human condition for more than 40 years through people most often cast aside by society. Witkin’s photographs are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles; Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, among many others.

Desert Shores (Lost America) : a photo & video exhibition by Isabelle Hayeur

Opening on Saturday September 10 - 3PM to 5:30P at Hugues Charbonneau Gallery in Montreal

In 2015 - 2016, I traveled across the desert surrounding the Salton Sea area in California. The works I created while I was there will be presented at Hugues Charbonneau Gallery - from September 3 to October 22, 2016. A few photographs from the Desert Shores series will be exhibited along with a recent 36 minutes video work. It is possible to watch this experimental video on Vimeo's Video On Demand. The artist would like to thank le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Hugues Charbonneau, Jacques Fournier and Alain Paiement.

Salton Sea is a large salt lake located on the San Andreas Fault, in an arid depression of Southwestern California, 227 feet below sea level. It was accidentally created at the beginning of the last century when the Colorado River overflowed its banks. It was a very popular tourist attraction in the 1950s and 1960s, and a paradise for fishing aficionados. Its shores were dotted by numerous hotels, marinas and yacht clubs. The area then underwent significant economic and population growth. Towards the 1970s, it was observed that the lake’s water level dropped and its salinity rose. The mirage gradually faded… It was replaced by no-man’s lands and ghost towns. Today, the area surrounding the Salton Sea is deserted and desolate; the water is polluted by alluvial deposits saturated with fertilizers and pesticides; algae blooms are decimating the fish. Beach side resorts have given way to trailer parks, home to the poor, the marginalized and Mexican immigrants.

The forlorn landscapes surrounding the Salton Sea are loaded with social, political, environmental and metaphoric implications. They seem to mirror a lost America, an era in which everything seemed possible and accessible for all citizens. These strange lands give us another, unflattering image, of a nation more divided and unequal than ever. These are like other areas of dire poverty found all across the United States, a Third World of their own where the most destitute live for lack of a better alternative. Nowadays few people care about the Salton Sea and its inhabitants. The area brings in low tax revenue for the State and only the toxic fumes it emits are cause for some concern, since, on windy days, Riverside County, California’s richest, is overwhelmed by the smell of death.

Erwin Blumenfeld: From Dada to Vogue

Erwin Blumenfeld: From Dada to Vogue, which will highlight a rare collection of early works by the legendary photographer many of which have never before shown in the UK. Beginning 5 October at Osborne Samuel, the exhibition will feature original photographs, collages, drawings and personal ephemera from one of the world's most influential fashion photographers.

The exhibition will trace the development of Erwin Blumenfeld's experimental photography practice from his early collages through to some of the most iconic fashion imagery gracing the covers of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Best known for his commercial photography, Blumenfeld also created avant-garde nudes, portraits and Dadaist collages that pushed the boundaries of the medium of photography and continues to influence photographers working today.

The exhibition invites visitors to engage with one of the greatest twentieth century photographers, whose legacy lives on in and to enjoy a seldom exhibited collection of some of the most captivating images ever created in the history of photography.

Erwin Blumenfeld (1897-1969) was born in 1897 in Berlin into a Jewish bourgeois family. After his father's death he entered an apprenticeship in the garment industry and then served as a soldier in France in the First World War. In 1918 he left to Holland and married Lena Citroen, opening a leather goods shop in Amsterdam in 1923 whilst also trying to become a painter. During the early twenties he participated in the Dada movement as a self-proclaimed head of the Dutch Dada movement, under the pseudonym of Jan Bloomfield. He began experimenting with photography in the early thirties, taking photographs of customers in his shop and later exhibiting his works at the Van Lier gallery in Amsterdam. When his business went bankrupt, he left for Paris in 1935 where he was introduced to the world of fashion photography and to French Vogue magazine, thanks to Cecil Beaton who admired his photographs. During World War II, Blumenfeld was interned in French war camps but managed to escape to the US with his family in 1941 through Marseilles. In New York where he was offered a contract by Harper’s Bazaar and after three years began freelance work for Vogue US. Within a few years he had become one of the most famous color fashion photographers in the US. He continued to work in fashion and advertising until the early sixties, when he devoted his time to writing his autobiography 'Eye to I'. He died in Rome in 1969.

Ruslan Lobanov: Nudes in the City

Photographic exhibition: "Nudes in the City", March 3rd, 2016 to March 25th, 2016
Opening on March 3rd, 2016, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Ruslan Lobanov’s cinematographic photograpy will be featured in the upcoming exhibition „Nudes in the City“ at Gallery INA DEDERER & FRIENDS.

Ruslan Lobanov is one of today’s most popular artists in the post Soviet Union space. His black and white, and color, photography have left a strong impact on photography collectors and enthusiasts in both Europe and North America.

Lobanov’s impressive achievements include mention and nomination for California’s Black &
White Spider Awards in 2012 and 2013, and a 2015’s International Color Awards honorable
mention. His works have been exhibited in his home country Ukraine, as well as in Belgium and Germany. His exhibit in Zurich at Gallery INA DEDERER & FRIENDS marks his first show in Switzerland.

Ruslan’s uniqueness comes from the mystery and elaborate elements of female nakedness
which blend harmoniously with collectible accessories, handmade costumes and attentively
selected locations. Ruslan was mostly inspired by his older sister, a designer, and what he calls "the magnificence of beauty" which he was fortunate to have observed as a child, in art books, costumes and creative atmospheres.

Whilst visiting different countries and observing multiple cultures, Ruslan photographed a large mosaic of female models from Havana to Kiev, and from Galle to Moscow. The inimitable aura of each city is reflected in each stunning female’s unique look. «Lobanov’s album is just strikingly brilliant. Full point.», stated Janusz Leon Wisniewski, a reviewer of Nudes in the City. A new book supporting the exhibit, Nudes in the City, features many never-before-seen photos from the main project that was created over the last ten years. The book’s 104 black and white works depict Ruslan’s essence of feminine beauty—confidence and strength with space for the viewer’s interpretation.

Lobanov mostly works with different analogue cameras and the medium format. His favorite is Rolleiflex, but he uses different systems, such as Pentax 67, depending on the project and location. Up to 2015, most of Lobanov’s photos were shot using black and white film. His new photo stories are partially color, partially black and white. All works are limited edition prints, mostly of 15 copies. Photo sizes include 70 cm x 70 cm and 100 cm x 100 cm. The Exhibition Opening will be held on March 3rd, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8.30 pm at Gallery INA DEDERER & FRIENDS. The artist will be present to introduce his work and to sign a limited number of books which will be available for purchase.

Guilhem de Castelbajac: Ghosts of Glory

EARTH GALLERY is pleased to invite you to discover « GHOSTS OF GLORY »,
an historical and photographic exhibition dedicated to the artist Guilhem de Castelbajac.

The artist Guilhem de Castelbajac is foremost inspired by historical marks and traces,
encountered on his peregrinations to forgotten places, ruins, and nebulous streets
- all of which have come to symbolize immemorial battlefields.

In the enigmatic images formed by these encounters, Castelbajac transports these battle scars
and successes into an undatable vortex, where heroes, chimeras, and power structures wash into myth.

These myths, which compose contemporary society - a space where digital prolificacy has congealed memory
into collective numbness - influence Castelbajac’s desire to create a crystalline defiance of numerical era, a trail left by the invisible.

Embracing its prime location, 35 avenue Matignon, in Paris, Earth Gallery represents and exhibits many new and established artists
from different cultural backgrounds. The fundamental approach aims to promote international contemporary art in Paris mainly focused
on paintings, photographs and sculptures devoted to the integration of arts into every aspect and culture of daily contemporary life.

Australia: Robyn Beeche - A Retrospective

On the 2nd of February Black Eye Gallery is proud to present 'Robyn Beeche - A Retrospective' celebrating the extraordinary photographic work of Robyn Beeche whom sadly passed away earlier this year.

The exhibition will present Beeche's documentation of seemingly opposing worlds: the post-punk, new romantic fashion and music scenes of 1980s London, and the colour saturated Hindu ceremonies held in the Indian pilgrimage town of Vrindayan, Uttar Pradesh. Beeche was an active collaborator of counter-culture personalities Zandra Rhodes, Vivienne Westwood, Leigh Bowery and Divine with her work being characterised by a fascination with documenting physical and spiritual transformation.

Robyn Beeche, the native Sydney photographer, who sadly passed away this year at the age of 70, documented seemingly opposing worlds: the post-punk, new romantic fashion and music scenes of 1980s London, and the Hindu ceremonies held in the Indian pilgrimage town of Vrindayan, Uttar Pradesh. Beeche became renowned in London for her ground breaking photos of painted bodies, transforming the body into a canvas and a site of dynamic exploration.

Collaborating with counter-culture personalities Zandra Rhodes, Vivienne Westwood, Leigh Bowery and Divine, Beeche was drawn to personalities who were fascinated with the possibilities of physical transformation. Employing imaginative makeup and sophisticated lighting, bodies were fragmented, distorted and transformed into sculpture. Regularly visiting India in the mid-1980s at the peak of her career proved life-changing with Beeche settling in the pilgrimage town of Vrindavan permanently in 1992. For the next three decades Beeche captured both the serenity and dye-drenching ecstasies of Indian religious rituals. The colour saturated week-long Holi festival in Vrindayan reminiscent of Beeche’s experimental work with makeup artists.!

Anne O’Hehir, curator at the National Gallery of Australia, stated that, “much of Beeche’s work of the 1970s and 1980s sits in its own place between fashion photography and art photography. For me there’s an interesting tension in her work between the image as decoration and the image as portraiture – particularly in the images of famous figures – Leigh Bowery, Sir Roy Strong, Andrew Logan.” ! ! Beeche’s inspiring life story has been told by Lesley Branagan in a revealing documentary film ‘A Life Exposed – Robyn Beeche: a photographers transformation’, which was broadcast on ABC TV June 2013. The film reveals how Beeche, at the center of London’s high fashion world, finds that fame and success are no longer enough and traces her intrepid
move to India to rediscover herself.! ! Robyn Beech is survived by her brother, Geoff and sister, Gai.
