The exhibition will include portraits of people from around the world, with a special focus on Parr’s wry observations of Britishness, explored through a series of projects that investigate British identity today, including new works which reveal Parr’s take on the social climate in Britain in the aftermath of the EU referendum.

Toronto: Ecology of a Landscape

More information: HERE

Barbara Edwards Contemporary is pleased to present our inaugural exhibition for BEC Project Space at 315 King Street West. Ecologies of Landscape gathers work by nine highly accomplished artists from Canada and abroad to re-imagine our perceptual, aesthetic, and ethical relationships with our home planet. In diverse media and from a variety of cultural and geographical perspectives, these artists ponder what our connections to the Earth might be in this time of widespread concern about climate change. Especially in Canada, landscape painting has been the dominant way to approach and appreciate what we construe as 'nature' as well as our own identities. With increasing urgency since the 1960s, however, artists worldwide have grappled with the inadequacies of the landscape genre amidst concerns over land stewardship and the environmental degradation of our shared planet. Works in this exhibition reconceive land and landscape as presented and experienced in art.

Ecologies of Landscape challenges us to reconsider what art and artists can contribute to the ecological future of the Earth, what 'being terrestrial' means for each of us. British European artist Tacita Dean photographs the stunning oddities of Madagascan Baobab trees. Bonnie Devine's Radiation and Radiance drawings and Canoe: to the North Shore narrate the discovery of uranium near Elliot Lake in the Algoma region of northern Ontario and its impact on the Anishinaabe Ojibwa of the Serpent River First Nation, to which she belongs. Documenting a rock on an Icelandic glacier from all sides, Olafur Eliasson's photo series The small glacier surfer sets the long game of geological change against the time it takes for a human being to move around an object. Isabelle Hayeur disrupts the seductive beauty of conventional underwater photography with a troubling image of Spirogyra - a plant that thrives on pollutants left by humans - photographed in Québec's Eastern Townships. Reflecting on the horrors of missing and murdered Indigenous women, Shelley Niro's photographs recall landscape photography in a familiar role, that of nature as a refuge from a violent human world. James Nizam employs the magic of the camera obscura to create two still images focusing our gaze on that most fundamental diurnal phenomenon, the rising and setting of the sun. Reinhard Reitzenstein's meticulous 'text' drawings of trees intone a profound reverence for these arboreal beings. British artist Simon Starling's digital video and stills titled Project for a Rift Valley Crossing - set in the Dead Sea area of the Middle East - hypnotically involve us in the material and conceptual dimensions of our interactions with land and water. Paul Walde's video Tom Thomson Centennial Swim returns to a regional obsession about landscape art and the land, commemorating Thomson's mysterious death on Canoe Lake in 1917.

Ecologies of Landscape is curated by Mark A. Cheetham, University of Toronto. His book Landscape into Eco Art: Articulations of Nature Since the '60s was published in 2018. Neda Omidvar, Director at Barbara Edwards Contemporary, is the Assistant Curator.

If Slovenia were... Contemporary Slovenian photography curated by Klavdij Sluban

EXHIBITION July 2 to september 23

OPENING Today, July 5, 7:30pm::
Visit of the exhibition in the presence of the artists at the Voies Off Gallery
followed by a cocktail in the Cour de l'Archevêché at 9 pm

SCREENING
July 5 at 10pm, Cour de l'Archevêché

MEETING WITH THE ARTISTS
July 6, 3pm, Voies Off Gallery

“The project “If Slovenia were…” represents a photographic vision of the country through the eyes of 19 contemporary Slovenian photographers. All of the series were developed specifically for this project between 2015 and 2018. The participating photographers were selected in an open call. Through distinct individual expressions, the authors articulate their own vision and interpretation of the country they live in. “If Slovenia were…” shows the different layers of Slovenia nowadays through the feeling these young photographers (the average age is 34) carry within themselves. The end of Yugoslavia and its war (1991-2001) are far behind them. New refugees cross their country. Themes rank from globalized suburbs and growing malls to family life and the inner self. The perception is focused as much on Slovenia nowadays as the place each of these 19 photographers has within this society."

ABOUT THE BOOK
Internationally renowned artist and University of New Mexico alumna Meridel Rubenstein creates photographic artworks that engage the natural world and investigate humanity’s place within nature. Eden Turned on Its Side looks at ecological and human processes across time that either reinforce or destroy the notion of “Eden.” Focusing on poetic intersections of nature and culture in relation to ecological and social imbalance, the work consists of large-scale photographic images that tend toward immersive installation, as is characteristic of much of Rubenstein’s art. It comprises three parts — Photosynthesis, Volcano Cycle, and Eden in Iraq — which respectively explore ecologies on the scales of human time, geological time, and mythical time.
“Eden Turned on Its Side is not presented as a timeline but as a natural cycle of life, death and rebirth where human beings and nature are deeply connected and exist in true symbiosis.”
 – PATRICIA LEVASSEUR DE  LA MOTTE, France/Singapore, Independent Curator

Moscow: Big Ballet by Sasha Gusov

June 28 - September 23 at the Lumière Brothers Center of Photography

Sasha Gusov. Nina Kaptsova. Corsaire. London, 2016

The Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography presents an exhibition from photographer Sasha Gusov, which will display a cycle of photographs of the Bolshoi Ballet Company. The exposition will include about 50 unique shots made during the period between 1992 to 2016, from behind the scenes of the "big ballet", the brand that emerged during the first and incredibly successful tour of the Bolshoi Theater troupe in 1956.

Sasha Gusov’s photos perfectly convey the dynamics and expressiveness of ballet dance. There are among them beautiful staged portraits and fascinating, finely grasped shots of rehearsals and performances. Shot on film, "on the move" and without additional lighting, they captivate with their efficiency. "Photography is documentary – it just fixing something that is happening in a particular moment," says the photographer. And Gusov, like no other, knows how to masterfully catch these random situations. Nevertheless, he not only fixes the event, but also skillfully conveys the state of the caught instant.

New Call for Entry: LIGHT

Our first printed issue of AAP Magazine will feature the best projects showcasing the theme "Light". Light is what allows us to see. It is what shapes and colors every object, creates depth, mood and mystery. Daylight, candlelight, inner-light, traffic light... Play with light!

"Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography."
- George Eastman

Where would the photographer be without light, the basic tool of all photographers?
From the blackest night to the brightest day, the deepest shadows to the starkest highlights, send us your images that illustrate your understanding and response to light!

Uruguay: Alberto García Alix "un expresionismo feroz"

Jointly produced by the CCE, Centro de Fotografía de Montevideo (Montevideo’s Photographic Centre) and the Xippas Gallery.

Motorcycles, women, music, night-life, drugs, life and death have always served as an inspiration to Alberto García- Alix. ‘Photographs of motorcycles, in particular, have become a focal point of his work and are part of his latest published book, entitled Moto. It covers a broad spectrum, from the first snapshots that he took in 1975, during a motocross race involving his brother, to 2007, incorporating a new block of unpublished photographs with which the artist initiated a renovated photographic discourse through a more abstract and allegorical use of images.
There is a radical transformation between his images of the 80s and 90s and those of the present. His earlier pictures comprise portraits and self-portraits of characters mounted on their machines in the midst of a number of circuits, festivals, streets and highways, introducing us into the world of motorcycling from within. In his more recent work, whole machines are never on view. More suggestively, he plays with their shadows and with the writhing effects of the light projected upon them. In short, this suite of photographs transmits the beauty and the care with which García-Alix has portrayed his life and its links to the motorcycle.’
Motorcycles and life; motorcycles and death. The motorbike is no longer an object and has become a character in itself, as important as those who ride them. It has its own life and soul; its soul is present in its shadow, with its blurred outline distorted by paving, pavement, and drains. The real object is transformed through the use of a fierce expressionism; allegory, feelings, state of mind; what is actually defined or present matters little. Motorcycles, like the buildings of Paris or China or the silhouettes of trees and railings express extreme solitude, forlornness; metaphors for abandonment or escape.
These photographs of a motorcycle-driven life have been interspersed with others, which are essential in the iconography of Alberto García-Alix and in the iconography of Spanish photography; his portraits and self-portraits, which he identifies as: ‘a confrontation in which he tends to place himself frontally, face-to-face with his model’, and which has resulted in timeless images which are now part of the rich history of photography. They represent reality from within – he has never been a peripheral artist – primarily of the movida madrileña, a countercultural movement which entailed a radical change in the culture of Spanish society during the transition to democracy and whose leading players were Pedro Almodóvar, Rossy de Palma, Emma Suárez, Alaska and many others, masterfully portrayed by the artist. But García-Alix never left it at that; rather, with the speed of a motorbike on a road without curves, he has established a fundamental distance from those photographs. His expertise continues today with his exposure of wonderfully dark characters with intense eyes, of nocturnal buildings, of vegetation which is alive and yet dead. Above all, his incredible, sincere and brutal introspection, delving into himself and his most intimate world; that is the true essence of García-Alix’s current work, his most disturbing findings.
Ricardo Ramón Jarne

Alberto García-Alix was born on 22 March 1956 in León, Spain. When he was eleven years old, he moved with his family to Madrid, where he currently resides. His earliest negatives date back to 1976. He held his first solo exhibitions in the early eighties, in galleries in Madrid such as the Buades Gallery or the Moriarty Gallery, and in international venues such as the Portfolio Gallery of London.
During the first PhotoEspaña show held in 1998, he presented a major retrospective exhibition, to huge critical and public acclaim. In 1999, he received the National Photography Award from the Spanish Ministry of Culture, and began working with the Juana de Aizpuru Gallery in Spain and the Kamel Mennour Gallery in France.
Between 2003 and 2006 he lived in Paris, where he produced a video trilogy alternating photographs and films, representing his venture into the video format, which he continues to explore to this day.
In 2009, he held a retrospective exhibition at the Reina Sofía National Museum Art Centre of Madrid, as well as at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art of Beijing and at the Maison de la Photographie of Moscow. Recently, he has held exhibitions at the Maison Européene de la Photographie in Paris, at the Photographers’ Gallery in London, at the Contemporary Art Museum in León and at the Tabacalera Promoción del Arte in Madrid.
His work can be found in large international collections such as the Reina Sofía National Museum Art Centre (Spain), the Fonds Nationales d’Art Contemporain (France) or the Deutsche Börse (Germany), among others. García-Alix has combined his photographic activities with those of an editor; he founded the cultural journal, El Canto de la Tripulación (1989 to 1997), and, more recently, jointly founded the Cabeza de Chorlito publishing house, together with Frédérique Bangerter, under the imprint of which he has published some of his most recent creations: El paraíso de los creyentes (Believers’ Paradise) (2011); Diaporamas (2012); MOTO (2015) and Motorcycle Family Circus (2016).
