Basquiat Collaborator Creates Mural at Art Wynwood to Honor Victims of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting
Street artists Al Diaz, Danny Minnick and Edwin Baker created a special mural on the Art Wynwood tent today to address the recent school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Al Diaz is a New York based artist and along with Jean-Michel Basquiat was the creator of SAMO, and he flew to Miami to create the piece and pay his respects to the tragedy that occurred on Wednesday February 14th, 2018.
The mural reads: SAMO 4 THE ANGRY CHILD FEELING ALL ALONE SECRETLY FORGING A HEART “COLD AS STONE” COMTEMPLATES VENGEANCE, STARES AT HIS PHONE LEAVES US 2 CLEAN UP, THE FLESH, BLOOD & BONE.
In addition, in response to the tragedy, Art Miami LLC will donate half of all box office proceeds generated during Art Wynwood to victims and their families of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy.
Nick Korniloff, Founder, Art Wynwood, comments, “Due to the unimaginable tragedy that unfolded on Wednesday February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, half of the box office proceeds made during this weekend’s Art Wynwood fair will be donated to support the victims and their families. Myself and the fair’s ownership team are approaching and encouraging all of our 70 galleries and vendors to make additional donations. Resorts World Miami LLC, the property owner of One Herald Plaza where this year’s fair is taking place, has already committed to a generous donation, as has Eventstar Structures, Spuntino Catering, Platform International LLC, and Accurate Event Group, and we feel confident that many more of our colleagues and friends in the compassionate international art world will join us. We encourage everyone to donate to the official GoFundMe site for the Marjory Stoneman High School FUND ME PAGE. Art Wynwood will make its donation following the fairs closing on Monday February 19th, 2018.”
