Launch Street Photography Contest
Our 44th printed issue of AAP Magazine will feature the best projects showcasing the theme "STREET".
Encyclopedia Britannica defines Street photography has "a genre that records everyday life in a public place."
Photographers have been documenting their environment since the invention of photography. The image "View of the Boulevard du Temple" by Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre, shows a Parisian street in 1838. Later encouraged by improvements in the portability and quality of cameras many photographers decided to record urban life. Charles Nègre, Eugene Atget, Alfred Stieglitz, Andre Kertesz, Berenice Abbott, Henri Cartier Bresson, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Vivian Maier, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston... are amongst the many iconic photographers who captured changes in the fast-paced world of life in towns and cities.
Capturing the essence of the urban lifestyle is now both a popular form of art and an important medium of communicating the heart and soul of a society and its people.
Send us a cohesive body of work or portfolio - capturing the weird and wonderful moments unfolding around you! The subject is completely up to you. Any capture method or process, whether digital or analog, including monochromatic toning, is welcome.
Winners will receive $1,000 in cash awards, their winning portfolio published in AAP Magazine#44, extensive press coverage and global recognition.
All winners will have their work published in the eighth printed issue of AAP Magazine, a free copy of the magazine and their portfolio showcased in the Winners Gallery of www.all-about-photo.com.

France: Yasuhiro Ishimoto - Lines and bodies
Yasuhiro Ishimoto. Chicago, Beach,1948-1952 © Kochi Prefecture, Ishimoto Yasuhiro Photo Center
from june 19 to november 17, 2024
From June 19 to November 17, 2024, LE BAL presents a remarkable figure in the history of Japanese photography, yet little known in France: Yasuhiro Ishimoto (1921-2012). For the first time in Europe, the exhibition, organized in close collaboration with the Ishimoto Yasuhiro Photo Center at the Museum of Art, Kochi, Japan, brings together 169 rare prints, most of which are vintage and made by Ishimoto himself. The exhibition focuses on the first decades of his work, between Chicago and Japan. A key figure of the 1950s and 1960s, he was considered "visually bilingual" for his ability to combine the formal approach of the New Bauhaus with the quintessence of Japanese aesthetics.
This unique alchemy is the result of an extraordinary journey. Trained at the Institute of Design from 1948 to 1952, Ishimoto embodies the first generation of photographers of the Chicago School, marked by the dual influence of Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Upon his return to Japan in 1953, he became a major figure on the Japanese art scene. His photographs of the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto created a body of work that sent shockwaves through the world of architecture and design, as evidenced by the words of art director Ikko Tanaka, who noted that Ishimoto was the first to introduce "an intellectual and austere modernism that greatly inspired us... His stone paths evoked Brancusi sculptures... He cast a radically new gaze on the world."
During the same period, Ishimoto paved the way for new approaches to the photo book with the publication of one of the most important works in the history of Japanese publishing, Someday, Somewhere (1958). This book, with its experimental graphic design for the time, had a significant influence on a young generation of photographers and designers.
Driven by a quest for constant reinvention, Ishimoto became a conduit of modernity in photography, blending Japanese culture with Western influence. Observing his scenes of Chicago or Tokyo, with their orderly and vibrant beauty, one understands why he became, in the words of Stefan Zweig, an "extraordinary intermediary between Eastern and Western people, a man of double dimension, capable on the one hand of contemplating with astonishment and respect the foreign aspect of this beauty, and on the other of representing it and making us understand it as something self-evident, as a beauty experienced from within and made his own."
– Diane Dufour, curator of the exhibition

Netherlands: ROBIN DE PUY ' Water & Meer'
From 15 June to 8 September 2024, the exhibition ‘Water & Meer’ by Robin de Puy will be on show at Museum Henriette Polak. 'Waters & Meer' shows a selection from the well-known photographer's recent projects Down By The Water (2022) and Waters (2023). The recognisability of her work and the impressive portraits she creates touch a wide audience. The exhibition was put together in close cooperation with Robin de Puy.
"The longer I don't travel, the more I dare to look at where I live. I see how my new surroundings take care of me. How the baker and the greengrocer bring my groceries to my door every Saturday morning. How all kinds of people call this their village, their neighborhood, their home. I see families who have lived here for generations, I see refugees, outcasts, and graduates, I see urban diversity mixed with a small village frame of mind."
Robin de Puy has lived for several years in Wormer, a small village surrounded by water just north of Amsterdam. She is fascinated by rural America and discovered during the recent lockdown that her new surroundings also turn out to be very universal, with the same kind of small-town local icons she has often encountered during her travels through the landscapes of America.
Robin de Puy; Ali and Saker #2, 2021
Robin de Puy (1986) studied at the Fotoacademie Rotterdam and has previously exhibited at institutions and galleries including the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht (2018), the Fotomuseum Den Haag (2016), the Stedelijk Museum Breda (2016) and Photoville, New York (2016). Among numerous other awards, De Puy won the National Portrait Prize in both 2013 and 2019. Her work is in important public and private collections, including the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht; De Nederlandse Bank, Amsterdam; Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar; Centraal Museum Utrecht, Utrecht; Fotomuseum Den Haag, The Hague; Huis Marseille, Amsterdam and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Hague. Photos by De Puy are very regularly published in De Volkskrant, among others, and in photo books.
The Mondriaan Fund, the public incentive fund for visual arts and cultural heritage, has made this exhibition possible.
The official opening of ‘Water & Meer’ will take place today June 14th from 15.00 to 17:00 at Museum Henriette Polak in Zutphen, the Netherlands. You can register for the opening using the button below.

The Helmut Newton Foundation and Pinault Collection proudly present CHRONORAMA. Photographic Treasures of the 20th Century. Following its highly successful premiere at Palazzo Grassi in Venice, the collaborative project will be shown at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin starting 15 February 2024. Amsterdam: Janette Beckman:Rebels
LL Cool J, Cut Creator, and Brian Latture, New York City, 1987
© Janette Beckman
Foam is proud to present the first large scale retrospective of the iconic punk and hip-hop photographer Janette Beckman. With a photographic career stretching over four decades, she documented pivotal underground movements from the early stages of the punk and hip-hop scene to recent movements like Black Lives Matter.
Rebels: An Ode to Subversives, Revolutionaries and Provocateurs sheds light on themes such as social justice, political activism, and youth culture.
Beckman is considered one of the most prominent photographers of the London punk scene during the 1970s and ‘80s. Her portraits of legendary groups such as The Clash, The Sex Pistols, and The Jam were often featured in influential magazines such as The Face and Melody Maker. In the early 1980s Beckman moved to New York, where she documented the rising hip-hop scene and its pioneers such as Salt-N-Pepa, Slick Rick and LL Cool J. Her photographs capture the raw energy and essence of the artists and have shaped the way we see these music cultures today.
Beyond her contribution to music cultures, the exhibition pays homage to rebels who challenge social and political norms, showcasing her photographs of recent movements such as Black Lives Matter, Anti-Trump protests, and peace demonstrations for Gaza. Beckman’s commitment to capture the subversives, revolutionaries and provocateurs highlights the broader social impact of her work. Furthermore, the exhibition explores how Beckman’s photographs have influenced brands, highlighting her campaigns for renowned brands such as Dior, Kangol and the shoot for Gucci x Dapper Dan. The exhibition, Rebels, serves as a tribute to some of the most important social movements and subcultures of recent decade

Edinburg: Matthew Arthur Williams: In Consideration of Our Times
Matthew Arthur Williams - In Consideration of Our Times
22 March – 15 June 2024
(preview 21 March, 6-8pm)
Stills presents an exhibition of new photography by Matthew Arthur Williams.
Williams is a Glasgow-based artist who has become known for a visual arts practice that explores themes of race, queerness, memory and history. A key concern that he addresses in his work is the absence of representation and how this can be perpetuated by formal histories and archives.
For Williams, memory is something that has to be worked on constantly for hidden histories to be revealed, retold, celebrated and preserved.
Often collaborating with others, Williams’ work typically incorporates photography, moving image and sound.
In his 2022 exhibition, Soon Come, at DCA, Dundee, he combined archive material with filmed documentary footage, interviews with family members and self-portraiture to explore the complex histories tied to people and place, particularly those of Jamaica and Stoke-on-Trent.
For the context of Stills, his exhibition consists entirely of new colour and black and white photographs. The methodical, slower-paced process of analogue photography, using a darkroom to bring pictures to life from photographic negatives, is something that Williams values.
The exhibition features a selection of new self-portraits and landscapes which Williams describes as being, “in a state of constant loss”. All the work on display has been produced in the publicly accessible photography darkrooms at Stills and at Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow.
Matthew Arthur Williams was born in London in 1989 and is a Glasgow-based artist, photographer and DJ. His work has recently been included in the exhibitions: Five By Five at Incubator, London (2024) and Pictures of Us at Gathering, London (2023). His solo exhibition, Soon Come was presented at Dundee Contemporary Arts (2022) and his work has been included in group exhibitions at Viborg Kunsthal, Denmark (2021); Edinburgh Art Festival (2021); Jupiter Artland, Edinburgh (2021); Schau Fenster, Berlin, Germany (2020); Taigh Chearsabhagh, North Uist (2020); Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow (2019); and Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2017). He completed a BA in Photography at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2012.
"A vital part of our role at Stills is to support, nurture and promote photographic practice in Scotland. By offering solo exhibitions to artists and photographers based here, we provide a valuable platform for practitioners to test and share new ideas.
Matthew Arthur Williams has developed a distinctive visual arts practice in Scotland and we are excited to give him this opportunity to showcase his recent photography - a medium that he has described as an anchor in his creative output and a passion since childhood.
We are proud that Matthew has also been able to produce all the work on display using our publicly accessible photography darkrooms as well as those at Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow” - Ben Harman 'At the top of the list for me when producing work that carries multiple themes or subject matters, my obsession with the power of image making and how we read an image comes first.
My work is saying something very loudly to me, and I like to leave it up to the viewer if those things resonate for them. This show at Stills is no different and continues to take a moment to stop or move at a slower pace.' - Matthew Arthur Williams
