Canada: Between Worlds: Barbara Cole traverses her artistic evolution in new exhibition & book release at Bau-Xi Gallery

The solo exhibition spans decades of the photographer’s work & coincides with the grand opening of the gallery’s new location in Toronto.
Fine art photographer Barbara Cole reveals the pioneering trajectory of her decades-long career in Between Worlds, a solo exhibition at Bau-Xi Gallery, on view September 5 – 30, 2023. Following the recent release of her new book, Between Worlds, published by teNeues publishing house, Cole’s exhibition at Bau-Xi Gallery mirrors the book’s holistic narrative by tracing Cole’s inventor-like spirit and painterly approach to photography sustained over the decades as well as where her work is heading next. The exhibition gathers works that span various points throughout her career as well as new works, together examining the ways she has experimented with photographic mediums to create imagery that is inventive, timeless, and dreamlike. The exhibition features several different bodies of work, including: selections from the new series Somewhere that evolves her signature underwater photography of the female form suspended within heavily adorned architectural spaces to create phantasmagoric scenes; selections from the series Shadow Dancing, her wet collodion practice in which she revitalizes the 19th Century photographic process with contemporary experimentation to create three-dimensional dance between light and shadow; selections of lenticulars that, paired with her underwater imagery, create an illusion of depth and weightlessness; and others. The exhibition coincides with the grand opening of Bau-Xi Gallery’s expansive new location on Dufferin Street on September 9, 2023. In tandem with artist Gavin Lynch’s concurrent exhibition, Between Worlds is the first formal exhibition to open at the new location. The artist will be in attendance for the opening reception on September 7, 2023, as well as for an artist talk, Q&A, and book signing on September 30, 2023.

Incredible Winning Images of AAP Magazine 33 Nature

We're delighted to reveal the names of the 24 talented photographers who won AAP Magazine #33: Nature. Predominantly women photographers, they come from 11 different countries and 3 continents.

For this new edition of All About Photo Magazine we chose to feature projects that beautifully capture the essence of nature, highlighting the magnificence of landscapes, wildlife, and flora & fauna. Nature photography is a captivating genre that explores and captures the breathtaking beauty of the natural world.

Nature photography not only celebrates the earth's majesty but also serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation and our responsibility to protect our planet for future generations. Behind the camera lens, photographers possess a unique skill to seize the intricate marvels of our natural world, ranging from the towering splendor of mountains to the delicate intricacies of a flower's petal. These images stand as potent ambassadors for our Earth, consistently reminding us of the breathtaking spectacles that grace our daily existence.

In a world often entrapped by the relentless pace of contemporary living, nature photography emerges as a sanctuary, urging us to pause and reflect upon the awe-inspiring landscapes, the diverse ecosystems, and the countless species that have carved their niche on Earth. These visual odysseys into the wilderness transport us to the farthest reaches of the globe, where untouched beauty remains unmarred by human hands. Through the lens of a photographer, we are allowed to partake in the exhilaration of a ride on a boat in Vietnam, discover Ethiopia's Simien Mountains, or the serenity of a sunrise in Patagonia. Yet, nature photography transcends the realms of visual escapism; it stands as a poignant reminder of our collective duty to safeguard our planet for generations yet to come. Every striking image, whether it showcases the vibrancy of a coral reef or the grandeur of an ancient forest, carries an implicit summons to action. These images articulate the urgency of conserving these irreplaceable treasures before they fade into oblivion. They awaken a profound sense of awe, kindling a desire within us to become more responsible stewards of the environment and fervent advocates for conservation.

In an era marked by the ominous shadows of climate change, deforestation, and the relentless loss of habitats, the role of nature photography amplifies in significance. It thrusts environmental challenges into the spotlight, emphasizing the intricate interdependence of all living creatures. When confronted with a photograph depicting critically endangered species or plastic bags choking our coral reef, we cannot remain apathetic. These images impel us to reconsider our choices, diminish our ecological footprint, and champion initiatives that champion sustainability and conservation.

Furthermore, nature photography possesses the unique ability to forge deep emotional connections between individuals and the natural world. It ignites within us a sense of wonder and reverence for the Earth, fostering an enhanced appreciation for the beauty and complexity of our planet. Through this profound connection, we are more inclined to embark on meaningful endeavors to safeguard our environment, be it through active participation in local clean-up initiatives, fervent support for wildlife conservation organizations, or impassioned advocacy for policies that address pressing environmental concerns.

Paris: Uchronie by Vincent Fournier

Uchronie, an exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature (Museum of Hunting and Nature), is dedicated to the work of photographer and artist Vincent Fournier.
Uchronie is the name given to a fictional reconstruction of history that might have differed from what we know. With this title, the exhibition is seen as so many disturbing parallel histories. What if?

In an alternative version of history, the Uchronie exhibition explores humanity's relationship with nature and technology. It raises questions about the possible evolution of life on Earth. Fournier is inspired by the utopian visions of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as space exploration and the redesign of life itself. His concept of 'future bursts' blends the phantastical and the believable, creating compelling stories from the past and present. The exhibition is a light-hearted exploration of how life as we know it has evolved over time.

Recognizing his unique work, the Museum invited Fournier to exhibit within its permanent collections. His 'augmented' animals, displayed alongside traditional taxidermy, create a wonderful juxtaposition. Observant viewers are drawn into a captivating game of spotting details that transform animals into enhanced future beings.

When in Paris, visit the exhibition at Musee de la Chasse et de la Nature, 62 rue des Archives, 75003 Paris. For any further information on Vincent Fournier or on any of his works for sale, please contact the gallery at info@theravestijngallery.com.

Italy: Sneg by Klavdij Sluban

On 23 March 2023, Galleria del Cembalo is glad to open in its rooms Sneg, an exhibition with photographs by Klavdij Sluban, French artist of Slovenian origin who is been dedicated to photography since his youth studying in Paris. He is a tireless traveller who often explores the routes traced by the railway lines that connect Europe and the East – such as the Transsiberian Railway – searching for his roots and the meaning of History. The show will be open until 13 May 2023.
The photographs on display are a selection taken from two series by the author: Autres rivages. La mer Baltique and Japan; the images are rigorously in black and white, more precisely in film, black, gray and white, a manual exposure meter at the bottom of a pocket, rarely used. What the two photographic projects have in common is a constant and consistent presence: the snow (sneg in Slovenian, the author’s mother tongue), silent subject of his shots.
The images of Autres rivages are the result of a journey along the Balkan peninsula and the countries bordering the Baltic Sea: never completely in focus, they show what appear to be glimpses casually shot in Poland, Kaliningrad, Finland, Russia, Sweden and other places in the Eastern Europe. On the other hand, the Japan that Sluban returns with his photographs is different from what we are used to seeing: neither well-kept gardens with flowering trees nor skyscrapers, but vast areas covered with snow that rather resemble remote areas of Eastern Europe, places seemingly inhospitable, inaccessible, lonely and isolated. In this background desolation, faces appear at times, motionless as the snow but full of composure and expressiveness.
For the photographer, the journey turns into a pilgrimage: the focus, placed on the life that surrounds him, intimately connects the journey to photography. His personal research is rigorous and coherent, often filled with literary references. In the words of Sluban: “I propose a journey in which the eye is guided between the reality of the present moment and the successive stratifications of History. A journey nourished by the richness of the past that has permeated the places that were crossed: St. Petersburg where Nabokov spent his childhood, Kaliningrad, ancient Köninsberg, the city where Kant and Copernico lived, making an impact on the philosophic thought of Europe”.

Melbourne: Ryley Clarke, Off the Well-Worn Path

Ryley Clarke presents Off the Well-Worn Path, a solo exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs as part of the gallery’s 2023 program.

Melbourne’s fortyfivedownstairs presents Off the Well-Worn Path, a new exhibition by Ryley Clarke opening on 21 February 2023. A photographic exhibition observing the relationship of the human condition, time, family and place, Off the Well-Worn Path seeks to connect the past and present through inheritance and regeneration. The body of work narrates an open dialogue that seeks to exchange the ever-increasing tension internally and externally of a childhood home, losing its relationship with its kin. Yet through time and experience, finding solitude and healing.

When Ryley’s mother sold their childhood home, it was an overwhelming and exhausting journey to clear the place. Originally built by Ryley’s Great-Grandfather and Great-Grandmother, over time it quietly decayed away. Once loved, the dust took over. Books, unopened boxes, and hoarded objects filled the rooms and hallways.

Restoring a place that is filled with so many memories, bright and dark, melancholic and vibrant, tested the artist’s mother’s perseverance. Despite that, and in the midst of a pandemic, the devotion Ryley witnessed during this process brought to light profound feelings of admiration for the strength and love that shone in the most trying of times. His pride is evident in the intimacy and introspectiveness of his photography.

Throughout the years they spent working on clearing the rooms bit by bit, the artist occasionally pulled out his camera to make photographs of the ever-precarious moments that symbolised the end of its journey for his mother and for their family. Focusing on the process, transformation and experience of clearing and restoring the childhood home, we encounter familial possessions once thought lost and reminisce about moments from here and there.

Ryley Clarke’s analogue techniques combined with his deep sensitivity to the subject matter imbue his work with a truly distinctive and human feel, evoking fond memory, nostalgia that create for the viewer pure moments for contemplation.
