All About Photo Awards 2023 - The Mind's Eye

Our 8th edition of the All About Photo Awards invites photographers from around the world to submit their best work for consideration. In reference to Henri Cartier-Bresson's photo essay, The Mind's Eye investigates the depth and thoughts behind each image.

"To take photographs means to recognize - simultaneously and within a fraction of a second - both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one's head, one's eye and one's heart on the same axis".
Henri Cartier-Bresson

Athens: Jose Ney Mila Espinosa “Narratives for the Illusion of an Imagined Face”

Exhibition duration: From November 18 to November 23, 2022

José Ney Mila Espinosa, is a Cuban artist with numerous awards and distinctions throughout his career. His works are hosted in museums in Europe and also in North and Latin America.

In this exhibition, being held at Blank Wall Gallery, “Narratives for the Illusion of an Imagined Face”, he presents a summary of all the graphic experiences he has captured by an intuitive impulse, from public situations to those of maximum privacy.

These images are the ones with which he has most identified in a very personal and intimate way. He believes that “The more information we get, the faster we understand and make a concrete idea, a conclusion that, in turn, will make us feel safe because we have understood”. In this case, the photographs do not belong to a place or to certain people. In this case they belong to any place on Earth and those people are ourselves.

The exhibition consists of B&W Photographs, which narrate the stories of the people depicted. The fact that the faces are not (clearly) visible gives the viewer the opportunity to identify with the person in question and even to create their own stories about the background of the photograph.

The exhibition will be hosted at Blank Wall Gallery

from the 18th until the 23rd of November and everyone who is interested to find out more about the art of José Ney Mila Espinosa is welcome.

Call for Entry: AAP Magazine #28 Streets

Our twenty-eighth printed issue of AAP Magazine will feature the best projects showcasing the theme "STREET".
Encyclopedia Britannica defines Street photography has "a genre that records everyday life in a public place."

Photographers have been documenting their environment since the invention of photography. The image "View of the Boulevard du Temple" by Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre, shows a Parisian street in 1838. Later encouraged by improvements in the portability and quality of cameras many photographers decided to record urban life. Charles Nègre, Eugene Atget, Alfred Stieglitz, Andre Kertesz, Berenice Abbott, Henri Cartier Bresson, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Vivian Maier, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston... are amongst the many iconic photographers who captured changes in the fast-paced world of life in towns and cities.

Capturing the essence of the urban lifestyle is now both a popular form of art and an important medium of communicating the heart and soul of a society and its people.

Send us a cohesive body of work or portfolio - capturing the weird and wonderful moments unfolding around you! The subject is completely up to you. Any capture method or process, whether digital or analog, including monochromatic toning, is welcome.

The results of AAP Magazine 26 Shapes

We're delighted to reveal the names of the 24 talented photographers who won ''AAP Magazine #26: Shapes''. Thank you to my dear friend Ann Jastrab, the Executive Director of the Center for Photographic Art for being a juror for this competition.

For this 26th edition of AAP Magazine, we were looking for submissions of works of art that explore composition and form as a fundamental aspect of the photographic aesthetic, be it pure visual formalism or in support of a thematic objective. Understanding shape and form is one of the pillars of photography composition, and it can make even the most common object become a work of art. Geometric, organic, positive or negative, shapes contribute to a photograph’s overall esthetics and vibes.

We chose twenty-four photographers for their different approach to the idea of Shapes. Their work is diverse: architecture, mixed- media, still life, abstractions... and use different techniques & perspectives but each one showcases a unique point of view.

Invisible Worlds on view at Blank Wall Gallery

 September 9 -21, 2022

Daniel Franc # Czech Republic

Daniel Franc is an internationally recognized aerial photographer creating fine art photography with his drone, discovering the beauty, energy and new views on the world.

His occupation and love for nature from an early age led him to landscape photography. Since 2017, he has been creating fine art aerial photographs that show the world's hidden beauties. He takes a step beyond landscape photography and explores the world from above by playing with shapes and colors showing us something we cannot see through our current perspective. Many times his photos depict the intervention of man in nature and its negative results. They expose the feelings of the artist, which cannot be expressed in words, but are visible in the images he creates.

For Daniel Franc more often than not, not many words are needed to tell a story. He prefers to let the viewer create his own stories based on the image he sees in front of him. This is also the reason why his photos are untitled. He wants the viewer to give his own title to the image he sees.

He has been the winner of multiple awards, notably 1st and 2nd place in the Minimalist Photo Awards, 3rd place in the IPA One Shot competition, 1st and 2nd place in the Czech Nature photo, 1st place in the Aerial category by the Royal Geographical Society UK and 2nd place in the drone category by the ND Awards. He holds more than 40 other awards and honors in international competitions

Daniel will be in Athens at the opening of the exhibition and will give two talks on drone photography for those interested, on Friday September 9th at 21:00 and Saturday September 10th at 13:00. Will be happy to see you.

New Call: AAP Magazine #26 SHAPES

© Anna Foersterling

Our 26th printed issue of AAP Magazine will feature the best projects showcasing the theme "Shapes". A shape is the form of an object or its external boundary, outline, or external surface. Look around you, observe all the points, lines, patterns or silhouettes that surround us. Square or circle, triangle or hexagon, rectangle or oval, the choice is yours!

Reveal us the elements that abstract into light, texture, shape and shadow!

The rhythm of surfaces, lines, and values is for me the essence of photography; composition should be a constant of preoccupation... an organic coordination of visual elements
 Henri Cartier-Bresson

Send us your images - series preferably- both where shapes may not just influence the pictures, but where it may also be the subject solely. Whether in architecture, portrait, landscape, nude, street or any other form of photography - classic or experimental: we're open to all genres and we want to discover the best and most interesting photography from all over the world.

France: Christine TURNAUER The Dignity of Gypsies and a Tribute to my Gypsy Friends

This exhibition The Dignity of Gypsies gathers photographs taken by Christine Turnauer between 2011 and 2016, initially in India – to where we can trace back the roots of the Gypsies, then in Eastern Europe, where her travels took her to Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo and Montenegro. The different trades photographed create a bridge between the Indian nomads and the Gypsies of Eastern Europe. All her travels have given rise to inspiring and moving photographs.

On the second floor, this exhibition also presents a Homage to my friends Gitanos with photographs taken mostly in Arles in 2019. During her “Presence” exhibition staged as a co-production between KLV Art Project and the City of Arles’ Culture department in Saint Anne’s Chapel in 2018, the photographer Christine Turnauer forged friendships that inspired her to make a tribute to her friends Gitanos from Arles and the Camargue in this retrospective exhibition of her work on the Gypsies presented at the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation from April to June 2022.
This personal exhibition brings together almost 125 black and white photographs over the Foundation’s three floors.

Christine Turnauer’s photographs on Gypsies were previously presented for the first time in Austria at the Forum am Schillerplatz in October 2017, with the release of her photo book “The Dignity of Gypsies” published in two languages (English, German) by Hatje Cantz in Europe in 2017 and D.A.P Publishing for the United States in 2018. This book, as well as some collector’s prints, were also exclusively presented in San Francisco (2018, KLV Art Project) and Shanghai (2018, KLV Art Project).
