All About Photo Presents 'Fading Shehuo' by Chris Yan
Discover the solo exhibition here All About Photo is pleased to present Fading Shehuo, a compelling photographic project by Chris Yan, featured in our latest online solo exhibition. Shehuo is a traditional folk celebration associated with the Chinese Spring Festival. Rooted in ancient rituals honoring the land and fire, it has evolved over thousands of years into a vital expression of China's agricultural heritage. More than a festive performance marking the Lunar New Year, Shehuo embodies collective memory, strengthens community bonds, and preserves the cultural identity of rural villages across Northwest China.
Today, however, this centuries-old tradition faces an uncertain future. Rapid urbanization has led many young people to leave their hometowns in search of opportunities in the cities, leaving behind aging communities and shrinking rural populations. As younger generations become increasingly disconnected from village life, the cultural significance of Shehuo risks being forgotten. The demanding skills required to perform and sustain the tradition require years of dedication, yet offer little financial reward, making it difficult to attract new practitioners.
Through Fading Shehuo, Chris Yan documents a tradition standing at a crossroads. His photographs capture not only the vibrant costumes, rituals, and performances that define the celebration, but also the resilience of the communities determined to keep it alive. Despite the challenges, Shehuo continues to be performed each Spring Festival, drawing villagers together in a shared expression of hope, remembrance, and cultural pride.
Combining elements of documentary and street photography, Yan's work offers a powerful visual record of a living tradition confronting the pressures of a rapidly changing world. His images serve as both a celebration of cultural heritage and a poignant reflection on what may be lost if these customs are allowed to disappear.

Discover the Winners of AAP Magazine 52 STREET!
This year’s winners showcase a remarkable diversity of approaches. Some photographers embrace classic documentary traditions, capturing spontaneous interactions and unguarded human moments. Others explore the street through bold color, shadow, graphic compositions, or conceptual approaches that highlight fleeting gestures, urban geometry, and the quiet rhythms of city life. Their photographs reveal humor, poetry, tension, and beauty — the very heart of street photography.
Across the series, we see human presence in all its forms: from monumental gatherings and sacred rituals to intimate, suspended moments of reflection. Whether capturing the anonymity of urban streets, the choreography of daily life, or the unexpected poetry in a single gesture, each photograph transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary.
Together, these 25 photographers remind us why street photography remains one of the most dynamic and accessible forms of contemporary photography. Every street corner holds a story — and these powerful images reveal just how many are waiting to be discovered.

Encyclopedia Britannica defines Street photography has "a genre that records everyday life in a public place."
Photographers have been documenting their environment since the invention of photography. The image "View of the Boulevard du Temple" by Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre, shows a Parisian street in 1838. Later encouraged by improvements in the portability and quality of cameras many photographers decided to record urban life. Charles Nègre, Eugene Atget, Alfred Stieglitz, Andre Kertesz, Berenice Abbott, Henri Cartier Bresson, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Vivian Maier, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston... are amongst the many iconic photographers who captured changes in the fast-paced world of life in towns and cities.
Capturing the essence of the urban lifestyle is now both a popular form of art and an important medium of communicating the heart and soul of a society and its people.
