Defining a Personal Vision is a workshop designed to recognize and bring out the expression and individual voice of each student. Sometimes we need help seeing exactly what our pictures are about; how do we improve, what do the pictures mean? Over the course of six classes students will be provided with both the time and guidance that will foster a solid body of work and gain deeper insight into their own personal vision.



Innovative iPhonegraphy

Learn to create amazing composites using the iPhone and focusing on just a few apps. Karen will teach you to integrate images and concepts into a final piece. Through practical demonstrations and a "field trip" in our immediate surroundings, students learn to combine images in order to express your own unique vision as a photographic artist. You will love using your phone in an entirely creative way.


Film & Darkroom 1: Beginning B&W

Film and Darkroom 1 is a workshop focused on the basic mechanics of making a B&W silver-gelatin photograph, from learning how to operate a camera, to developing film and making prints in the darkroom. Students can use a 35mm or medium format camera. The class meets on Wednesdays with additional lab time on Monday evenings.

Intro to Large Format Photography

Large-Format Photography uses simple yet powerful cameras to produce large negatives for printing in the darkoom or digitally at incredible resolution and detail. In this class everything is provided: Camera, film, and on location instruction in the field. We start on Friday evening with class session for familiarization to camera set up and operation, as well as film handling. Saturday will be spent photographing in the landscape. Sunday is into the darkroom to develop and proof the film.

Finding Your Vision: Weekend Workshop with Alex Webb & Rebecca Norris Webb

Do you know where you're going next with your photography–or where it’s taking you? Taught by Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb, this intensive weekend workshop will help photographers begin to understand their own distinct way of seeing the world and figure out their next step photographically—from deepening their own unique vision to the process of discovering and making a long-term project that they’re passionate about. A workshop for serious amateurs and professionals alike, from students to seasoned photographers, the workshop will include an editing exercise; a choice between an optional photography editing assignment or long-term project review; and visits to museum galleries, including a guided walk-through of the exhibition My Dakota: Photographs by Rebecca Norris Webb.

Workshop Leaders:
Alex and Rebecca are a creative team who often edit projects and books together, including their book and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, exhibition, Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba; Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb on Street Photography and the Poetic Image, and their new book, Memory City.

Best known for his vibrant and complex color work, Alex Webb has published eleven books, including The Suffering of Light. Alex’s work has been exhibited at museums worldwide and is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y., and the Guggenheim Museum, N.Y. Alex became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979 and has received numerous awards and grants, including a Hasselblad Foundation Grant in 1998 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007.

Rebecca Norris Webb has published five photography books, including The Glass Between Us and My Dakota. Originally a poet, Rebecca often interweaves her text and photographs in her books, most notably with My Dakota—an elegy for her brother who died unexpectedly—with shows this year at Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, and The Cleveland Museum of Art. Her photographs have appeared in Time, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, National Geographic, and Le Monde Magazine.

Photo Workshop at les Rencontres d'Arles in France

The famour French Festival les Rencontres d'Arles offers all year long photo worshops.


- Weekend Workshops:

The Rencontres d'Arles Discovery Courses are for amateur photographers as well as beginners. For two or three days you are totally immersed in the business of setting up photo shots and honing your critical eye.
These photo weekends are co-ordinated by professional photographers with a gift for teaching, all of whom are graduates of the top photography or art schools.
One of these courses can also be an excellent way of preparing for the 4 to 6 day courses that take place through the Spring and Summer.


-Spring Workshops: 

With the seven photo workshops planned for April and May, springtime in Arles promises to be a wonderful season for discovering things and getting involved in an exciting exchange of ideas. It all takes place in uncommonly beautiful surroundings. Everyone will be developing their techniques and honing their way of seeing things – with invaluable advice and precious tips from great professional photographers.
