Singapore: Undescribed #4 at DECK

Undescribed is an annual platform conceived by DECK to support emerging artists who have recently graduated from local and overseas art institutions. The exhibition presents works that challenge current image-making practices, suggesting new ways of approaching photography and the moving image within the field of art today.

Undescribed aptly labels the ‘unknown’ stage of these emerging creators, a period of potential and experimentation, both for their individual practices as well as their explorations into the medium of photography.

This year’s selection is made by visual artist, Robert Zhao, and director of DECK, Gwen Lee.

Undescribed #04 runs from 6 to 30 March 2019.

AAP Magazine #6: B&W

Our sixth printed issue of AAP Magazine will feature the best projects showcasing the theme "Black and White".

Black and white photography evokes poetry, nostalgia. The timelessness of black and white images focuses on its subjects, highlights contrasts, lines and enhances the power of light.

Send us your images - series preferably- celebrating the beauty and the power of black and white photography. The subject is completely up to you. Any capture method or process, whether digital or analog, including monochromatic toning, is welcome. The contest is open to any B&W photography interpretation, from photojournalism, street photography, artistic photography, portrait, nude, landscapes, nature, wildlife, urban, architecture, fashion, fine art or documentary photography.

Winners will receive $1,000 in cash awards, their winning image(s) or full portfolio published in AAP Magazine#6, extensive press coverage and global recognition.

All winners will have their work published in the sixth printed issue of AAP Magazine, a free copy of the magazine and their portfolio showcased in the Winners Gallery of www.all-about-photo.com.

London: Martin Parr "Only Human"

This major new exhibition brings together works by one of Britain’s best-known and most widely celebrated photographers, Martin Parr. Including recognisable photographs alongside works never before exhibited it will focus on one of his most engaging subjects – people.

The exhibition will include portraits of people from around the world, with a special focus on Parr’s wry observations of Britishness, explored through a series of projects that investigate British identity today.

Québec: Valérian Mazataud Grand Nord

Project description

Valérian Mazataud is a journalist, photographer and artist deeply invested in exploring new strategies to engage the viewer in this age of media. Since July 2018, he has been working on Grand Nord, a project based on photography workshops offered to residents of Montréal-Nord.

During these workshops, retirees, adults and teenagers invited to revisit photo archives from their neighborhood discovered a rich image-based popular history: from community celebrations to romantic trysts; from turnip fields to shopping centres; from the village of Sainte-Gertrude in the 1940s to refugees from the Haitian earthquake of 2010. Through their aesthetic choices, research, role-playing, and collaborative work with the artist, workshop participants recreated these scenes to produce new images based on their own local history.

Mazataud’s work embodies a reflection on documentary approaches in photography, and the relative nature of their objectivity. Having been struck by the strength of the social bond in Montréal-Nord, he committed himself to a collaborative process with members of the community. At Skol, he is presenting the photo series and sound recordings that emerged from these workshops.
